I’m honoured to be a fundraiser. For more than 25 years I’ve been connecting donors with their dreams of a better world through philanthropy. My career has taken me to nonprofits in the US and Canada creating change in education, healthcare, social services and the arts. I’m part of the fundraising team at Simon Fraser University, serving as Director of Advancement in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. I believe in the power of authentic relationships and gratitude to deepen connections with supporters.
I live in Vancouver, BC, am a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and serve on the board of the AFP Canada Foundation for Philanthropy. My colleague, Rory Green, and I co-host “Ms.Rupt,” where women fundraisers gather to discuss pressing issues in the non-profit sector. I enjoy speaking at conferences and mentoring open-hearted fundraisers. I know there is much to celebrate and improve in the sector and I enjoy inviting conversations which challenge the status quo.
I grew up in Seattle, WA, and completed my B.A. in Political Science at the University of Washington. I enjoy travel, hosting dinner parties, and connecting with fundraising peers around the world.
Everything in life shapes you.
Like a rock in water, you’re changed by every experience.
Behind every change is a story.
Years ago, I was inspired by the keynote speaker at a fundraising conference. Representative John Lewis talked about how fundraisers’ work fuels the movements that change the world. And about how giving can change everything.
I knew fundraising was the right profession for me.
The excitement of life is meeting its challenges, enjoying the love and helping other people. The best way to weather life’s changes is to lead with gratitude.
“Inspiration isn’t only for poets or artists.”
Nobel Prize winner Wislawa Szymborska noted, “Inspiration visits people who’ve consciously chosen their calling. And those who work with love and imagination. They could be doctors, teachers or gardeners. For them, work becomes a continuous adventure as long as they keep discovering new challenges. Difficulties and setbacks never quell their curiosity.”
For me, fundraising is that kind of calling.
I enjoy everything about being a fundraiser. Working with a team, working with donors, finding connections, building trust, and welcoming the heartfelt gifts of donors inspires me.
And I want you, fellow fundraiser, to feel inspired too.
I enjoy speaking to other fundraisers about how you can work smartly and well as a fundraiser. I like to help people find their own balance between work and life in this fun and demanding profession. And I enjoy coaching. I want to help fundraisers meet their challenges head on and find solutions.
