Coaching

I love my career working at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC, Canada as Director of Advancement working with supporters and alumni.

I believe being a fundraiser is the greatest career.

I hope you are leading an inspired career, too.

If you are feeling challenges in your career there’s a good chance that I’ve encountered it. I think in and out of the box – our sector can be challenging for creative, ambitious professionals on the rise. I like to help women come from a place of power – power they already have inside of them!

Together, we can see beyond the problem to find the solution for you:

  • Strategize to secure meetings with an elusive donor,
  • Uncover your confidence to make that big ask – maybe the biggest one you’ve ever made!
  • Translate your big idea into a concrete plan to execute at your nonprofit (even if you are meeting resistance),
  • Rediscover why you love the work you do – and steps to keep the inspiration alive,
  • Discover skills to collaborate with challenging colleagues, or
  • Plan how you will achieve that next career step – or find ways to create a happy niche where you are.

Other fundraisers say that I have a way of listening to and hearing them on the inside and then taking what I can hear, homing in on their strengths, and then giving them the courage to to go where they couldn’t on their own.

I have a wealth of experience on which to draw, having been a fundraiser in the U.S., Canada and for international causes. My passion is education, but I’ve also worked with donors in the healthcare, human services and the arts sectors.

I offer one-to-one coaching packages of 4 one-hour sessions, or 10 one-hour sessions. Let’s connect and talk for 20 minutes to find out what you need and where you want to go next in your career.

There may be times you want a coach. I would be delighted to work with you and…

share my philosophy of “fundraising to the heart” to discover donors’ values
help you find a solution that is authentically you, for your unique opportunity or difficulty
offer expertise from a decade of major gift experience and two decades of broad fundraising work
explain how I use high-touch philanthropy to better engage major gift supporters
shine a light on your strengths and leverage your unique strengths and opportunities

I enjoy helping fundraisers tap into their own superpowers – sometimes it’s as simple as an hour of discussion and other times you may need deeper conversations about strategic direction, career advice or how you achieve your best results.

That’s why I offer coaching for fundraisers like YOU. We can have an initial 30 minute discussion, by phone or Skype, and then set a time to dig in for an hour or for a series of three or more session. Simply contact me. Prices are customized to your specific needs. And if I don’t have the answer you need, I have a network of fundraising BFFs who may be able to help!

Kerin Brasch | Executive Director, Girls on the Run Puget Sound | Seattle, WA

Thank you for the one-hour coaching call we had helping us prepare higher asks of our donors for our signature event.
Your help has so encouraged me. Out of the 10 donors we discussed, I have 3 pledges so far for $2,500 at the auction and I’m not even close to being done!!!!
Dank, Gracias, Vivlen, Merci, Grazie, Tak, Obrigato… don’t know how to say thank you enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beth Ann is a passionate manager of people and process, and builds purpose within a team for the task at hand.
She brings creativity and energy to even the most conventional fundraising programs, and since working with her I find myself asking “what would Beth Ann do?” in my planning and execution. And she’s fun! You will not forget a session with her – such energy, enthusiasm, creativity and generosity. She remains a trusted mentor to this day.

Erika Magnuson-Ford | Executive Director, Terrace Chamber of Commerce | Terrace, BC

Working with Beth Ann was amazing in many ways. Her passion is contagious. As I was new to fundraising, learning the basics, tools, and working with donors could have been very stressful and difficult.
With Beth Ann as a mentor, her excitement and extensive knowledge made my job much more enjoyable. Beth Ann is approachable, fun, passionate, and knowledgeable. These qualities ensure that everyone who works with her becomes more passionate about their projects, donors, and roles.
With Beth Ann’s guidance, I was able to pick up the basics of fundraising and working with donors. Thankfully, although we now work with different organizations, Beth Ann is as approachable as ever and I know she is willing to share her knowledge and experience if I need.

Rickesh Lakhani | Executive Director, Future Possibilities for Kids | Toronto, ON

Beth Ann represents the growing voice and next wave of fundraising and philanthropy. She is a thought leader in the sector who is highly involved and dedicated to it. She has a genuine appreciation for the power of donors to influence and uplift the world around them. She also has extensive experience and demonstrated results behind her. And yet, she is very humble and keen to grow and learn from others, making sure her fundraising knowledge and repertoire are up to date.
During our idea exchanges and discussions, Beth Ann always provides me with relevant, creative and well thought-out guidance which I virtually always integrate into my fundraising approach. She is very easy to work with, highly driven and most importantly, brings out strength and the best in other people and within organizations. She also creates a positive space with her warm, kind and very fun energy. Any charity or fundraiser working with her stands to gain significantly from all she has to offer.

Claire Askew | Wellness Warriors Program Coordinator, Native Education College | Vancouver, BC

Beth Ann has been a wonderful support to me as my mentor through the Association of Fundraising Professionals mentorship program. She has spent many hours sharing her fundraising knowledge, experiences and practical strategies with me.
For example, one meeting I brought a draft copy of an event sponsorship package I had created and Beth Ann went through the package in great detail, providing helpful tips about matching images and text effectively along with writing clearly and persuasively. This resulted in a much better sponsorship package. Furthermore, I have also been able to apply this advice to improve other program communication materials.
I’ve received valuable advice from Beth Ann in many other areas as well. She has assisted in mapping my career path, job interview preparation and overcoming new challenges at work. She has often helped me to see things in a new and productive way and has helped me to resolve delicate situations.
One of the things I love the most about being mentored by Beth Ann is her feminist approach. She listens carefully, asks questions, is respectful and is always encouraging. Instead of a top down approach, we discuss the issues that I am facing and she helps guide me to the most beneficial outcomes. She has shared interesting resources with me and she has shown me how to incorporate a focus on gender in grant applications and other fundraising communication materials.
Beth Ann is warm and generous and lots of fun. She is a lovely host and we often have tea and goodies at our meetings. I don’t think I could have found a better mentor! Thank you Beth Ann!
